On Monday, the Walt Disney Co. (WDC) and Charter Communications (Charter) announced the settlement of their long-running dispute, which restored ESPN to roughly 15 million cable television subscribers hours before Rodgers was set to make his long-awaited debut as a starter for the Jets on “Monday Night Football.”
The agreement secures Disney’s $2.2B in threatened fees from Charter while providing the communications giant with an entry point into the streaming market that has attracted millions of cord-cutters.
On Aug. 31, Disney pulled the stations it owns from the Spectrum TV system owned by Charter, including ESPN and ABC, as well as National Geographic and FX, during the peak of the tennis season and the start of the college football season.
